Looking for something to do in Houston with your kids? Check out the Houston Children’s Museum! It’s an incredible experience for kids and adults alike.

Located in the museum district in Houston, TX, the Houston Children’s Museum offers a multitude of innovative exhibits and bilingual learning programs for kids from babies to 12 years old.

Serving more than 1,400,000 people annually, it is one of 190 children’s museums in the US and 15 children’s museums in Texas. Your kids will experience a wide range of activities that are stimulating, challenging, and straight-up fun!

How did this wonderful kids museum get started?

A group of Houston parents founded the museum in 1980, hoping to elevate early childhood development to a community-wide priority. It started in a small space leased from the University of Houston, and soon moved to a larger leased space on Allen Parkway. The museum moved to its current facility on the east side of the museum district in 1992. Designers Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi dreamed up a design that evokes both “institutional monumentality” and the playfulness suited for a building devoted to children. It is colorful to say the least!

The museum serves more than a million people annually, and reaches even more through outreach programs every year. Those visitors include families from 31 countries, all 50 states, and 905 other cities in Texas! More than 95% of those who visit rank it high on the “worth it” meter.

It has received numerous awards over the years, including “America’s #1 Children’s Museum” by both MSN.com and Parents magazine, and “Best Museum in Houston” by Nickelodeon Parents’ Picks.

And what might your kids see and experience if you take them on a trip to the children’s museum?

Here are just a few of the fun and exciting things they might get to do and see:

  • Enlist as a secret agent and crack codes, crawl through laser tunnels, and thwart the evil villains who are trying to take over the Children’s Museum!
  • Explore the outdoors through the native plant garden, solar-powered research pavilion, and pond habitat/woodland area.
  • Let their creativity take over in the inventors workshop and make extraordinary mechanisms and inventions.
  • Use their physical agility and stamina to make it through the a seven-obstacle low ropes course.
  • Experience a city run entirely by kids in Kidtropolis. Your kids can choose what they want to be and work together with other kids to make the city function.
  • See what animal vision picks up on that ours does not in Sights Unseen.
  • Experience a showcase of traveling art and culture from all over the world in Kid’s hall, where there are new activities every week.
