If you are an artist, philosopher, or beauty lover, you won’t want to miss the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston!

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is the largest cultural institution in the southwest regions, and the second-largest art museum in the United States. It is located in the Museum District of Houston, Texas, and ranks the 12th largest art museum in the world based on square feet of gallery space.

It contains an astounding collection of artwork from all over the globe: Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia and more. If you visit the museum and look at the artwork, here are some of the things you might see:

  • A huge collection of modern and contemporary art comprised of more than 1,400 objects spanning 6 different continents.
  • A panoply of photographs from the museum’s collection of 30,000 items spanning the entire history of photography from the invention of the camera to today.
  • Prints and drawings of works from the Middle Ages through the 21st century – prints, drawings, watercolors, pastels, paintings on paper, art books, and printmaking matrices.
  • Bayou Bend, the house museum for a huge collection of early American decorative arts including furniture, paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, glass, metals, and textiles.
  • Rienzi, the house museum for the European decorative arts, where you will find paintings, furnishings, porcelain, and beautiful gardens.
  • Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, a collection containing paintings, works on paper, and decorative arts, woodcuts, engravings, lithographs, and the “cabinet of curiosities.”

Overall, it is an incredible collection of culture, history, and humanity containing nearly 70,000 works of art from all ages and all places. Where else can you experience this many different times, cultures, emotions, and points of view all in one place?

You can visit the museum in person, or you can explore the beauty and culture online through the MFAH’s searchable database, or even see a virtual exhibition. The museum offers various education programs too, for kids, adults, students, families, and anyone with a beauty-loving soul.

There is more than just art at the MFAH too. The main campus comprises several different buildings and includes two cafes, a repertory cinema, two libraries, and two house museums for the decorative arts. You could stop by and hear a lecture, watch a film, or see a live performance sometime.

When you are done, stop in at one of the cafes for a bite to eat!

How long has this massive collection of art been around?

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is the oldest art museum in Texas. The site where the museum now stands was dedicated to become an art museum in 1917 and the building opened to the public in 1924. Since then the museum has been building up its collection of art from all times, cultures, and places to achieve the phenomenal gallery it has today.
