If you are preparing to build that new dream home, let’s make sure you are protected against lightning strikes. The last thing anyone building a new house wants is to overlook an easy opportunity to further care for their new place and the loved ones living in it.

With all of the homes we build, one of the first considerations we suggest is the installation of an ufer ground (pronounced oo-fer). Created by Herbert Ufer back during the World War II era, this funny-sounding term is actually the practice of grounding your electrical internally through your slab. It’s an approach still used today that all homeowners need to consider.

Here are just a few reasons why:

  • Installing an ufer ground is added protection above and beyond simply grounding the outside electrical where your power comes in.
  • The use of an ufer ground utilizes the properties of the concrete slab to your advantage. Often the soil directly around a concrete slab is a better conductor of electricity than average soil which can lead to a higher likelihood of lightning strikes if an ufer ground is not present.

Now for the Pro Tip. It’s essential to decide to use an ufer ground early in your home building process. Installing footings and foundations is one of the first pieces to your construction project, and is often complete by the time any electrical services are performed. If you don’t make the ufer ground part of the concrete project upfront, you risk missing the best window of opportunity. You want this incorporated during the placement of rebar and concrete footings!
