Freeze Protection Tips

Potted plants

  1. Drag into the garage, or next to a wall.
  2. Water them.
  3. If located next to a wall, cover with a tarp, blanket, towel or a box.
  4. For very tender plants, add a work light. Make sure it is not touching either the cloth or box.

Tender in-ground shrubs, perennials and annuals.

  1. Water them either the night before, or the morning before the freeze.
  2. Cover with a tarp, blanket, towel or a box.
  3. For very tender plants, add a work light. Make sure it is not touching either the cloth or box.
  4. Do not use plastic
    • It translocates the cold – it’s like you never covered the plant at all.
    • Trapped air becomes colder as moisture collects under the plastic.
    • If left on the plant during the day the sun’s rays will cook it.
    • Protect your outdoor faucet.
      • Disconnect the hose from it.
      • Wrap a kitchen towel around it. Secure with a rubber band.
    • Protect your irrigation system
      • Wrap a tarp around the inlet piping.
      • If the inlet piping is in an extremely exposed location, add a work light. Make sure it is not touching the tarp.

Last, but not least – bring your plants indoors.
